Vector Iconography & Symbol System
OUTLAW ESSENTIALS
01 / PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Type: Academic / Student Brief
Discipline: Iconography, Vector Illustration, Brand Assets, Visual Reduction
Theme: Wild West / Cowboy Archetypes
Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator
The Brief:
Select an inspiring visual theme and build a cohesive suite of instantly recognizable icons derived from real-world reference photography. The core objective was mastering visual reduction—distilling complex physical objects into balanced, high-contrast vector symbols.
02 / THE CONCEPT: VISUAL REDUCTION & SHARP EDGES
The Western aesthetic is defined by rugged textures, heavy leather, weathered metal, and wide horizons. The goal here was to strip away surface detail while preserving the unmistakable silhouette and attitude of each item.
Negative Space Precision: Using precise cutouts and negative space gaps (the split brim on the Stetson, the segmented longhorn skull joints, the stitch line of the boot) to define form without relying on outlines.
Unified Visual Weight: Calibrating stroke balance and solid black fills across the suite so every symbol commands identical visual presence on a grid.
Western Modernism: Balancing vintage frontier motifs with a crisp, geometric vector language suitable for digital interfaces, app iconography, or apparel branding.
03 / THE ICON SUITE
The Cowboy: A hat-and-mustache silhouette capturing the quintessential cowboy persona with minimal facial cues.
The Longhorn: A symmetrical steer skull with wide, segmented horns that capture the iconic desert motif.
The Spur Boot: Classic riding boot profile accented with a dynamic spinning spur.
The Horseshoe: Heavy-gauge iron shoe accented with nail holes and a distinct grip bar.
04 / COLORWAY & VERSATILITY
Monochrome Solid: High-impact black for maximum versatility and stark contrast.
Rust & Clay Duotone: A warm, earthy palette pairing rich cordovan/burgundy with terracotta accents, referencing tooled leather and desert dust.
Praying Mantis
Organic Geometry & Visual Reduction | Academic Student Project
01 / PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Type: Academic / Student Brief
Discipline: Vector Illustration, Iconography, Geometric Abstraction, Brand Mark Design
Subject: Praying Mantis (Mantodea)
Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator
The Brief:
Select an organic subject from reference photography and translate its complex anatomy into a minimalist, stylized vector symbol. The challenge was to balance biological recognition with clean, reductionist geometric abstraction using negative space cuts.
02 / THE CONCEPT: ANATOMY IN BRUSHED GEOMETRY
Insects possess intricate, delicate anatomical structures. The goal was to deconstruct the mantis into an economy of dynamic strokes without losing its predatory stance and elegant posture.
Segmented Negative Space: Broken, deliberate white gaps isolate joint articulations—the folded raptorial forelegs, thin antennae, triangular head, and segmented abdomen—giving the mark breathability and structure.
Rhythm & Repetition: The abdominal plates are abstracted into a series of repeating curved teeth, creating a rhythmic visual spine that anchors the insect's body.
Tension & Poise: Dynamic angles along the limbs evoke the poised stillness and sudden kinetic strike characteristic of the mantis.
03 / COLORWAY & TONAL VARIATIONS
Solid Black: High-contrast, sharp silhouette optimized for iconography, stamping, or print marks.
Charcoal & Silver Duotone: A softer, layered tonal study that emphasizes the abdominal depth and joint transitions.
Sage Green & Rose Accent: An organic, naturalistic palette utilizing leafy sage greens accented by muted rose-pink compound eyes, softening the predator's geometric precision.
